Your theme affects how customers perceive your brand and navigate your products. Shopify provides a default theme when you open your account, but you can add a free theme from within the admin or purchase a paid theme from the Shopify Theme Store.
To add a free theme, go to Online Store > Themes in your Shopify admin. In the Free themes section near the bottom of the page, click Explore free themes. Browse available themes, read about their features, and preview theme styles before clicking Add for the theme you want.
One important distinction: third-party theme developers do not provide customization services. If you need help modifying the code or layout of a paid theme, Shopify recommends hiring a Shopify Partner rather than expecting the theme developer to make changes for you.
Free themes are developed by Shopify, and customization support is provided by Shopify. Paid themes are developed by third-party designers, and support is provided by the theme designer.
Shopify also offers an AI-powered theme generation tool directly from the Themes page. You can describe your business in your own words and generate up to three free personalized theme options, which are then added to your Theme Library for preview and customization. This option is available on the Basic, Grow, and Advanced plans with English-language storefronts. If you are on the Starter plan, note that you can only use the Spotlight theme and cannot generate a personalized theme.
