How to Test Your Shopify Store Before Going Live

Testing ensures your checkout works, your payment provider processes transactions correctly, your taxes calculate as expected, and your fulfillment workflow runs smoothly. It also helps you understand what your customers experience at every touchpoint, from cart to confirmation email. Skipping this step means discovering problems after real customers have already encountered them.

Before you start testing, confirm your store is password-protected so test activity doesn't appear publicly or get indexed by search engines.

Go to your Shopify admin, click Online Store > Preferences, and scroll to the Password protection section. Make sure the toggle is enabled and a password is set.

Leave this on until you've completed all tests and are ready to officially launch.

You can test payments in three ways:

While any payment gateway is in test mode, real customers cannot complete credit card purchases in your store. Only activate test mode when you're ready to test, and deactivate it immediately after. If you need to test while your store is already live, do so in a very short window during low-traffic hours.

Before activating the Bogus Gateway, you must deactivate any existing credit card payment provider (such as Shopify Payments or a third-party gateway). Go to Settings > Payments, click Manage next to your current provider, select Deactivate, and confirm. The Bogus Gateway option becomes available only after this step.

Note: The Bogus Gateway is not compatible with subscription products. If you sell subscriptions and need to test subscription order flows, use Shopify Payments in test mode instead.

The Bogus Gateway simulates transactions without processing real payments. It's ideal for testing checkout flow, order creation, and email notifications.

From your Shopify admin, go to Settings > Payments. In the Payment providers section, click Choose a provider, then search for "Bogus Gateway" and activate it.

When placing test orders, use test card numbers provided by Shopify's Bogus Gateway documentation to simulate successful and failed transactions.

If you're using Shopify Payments, activate test mode to process simulated transactions through the real gateway configuration.

Go to Settings > Payments > Shopify Payments > Manage, then scroll to Test mode and enable it.

Test mode allows you to validate your Shopify Payments setup without charging real cards. You can't process credit card transactions through a Shopify POS card reader while test mode is active. When test mode is active, certain payment methods are unavailable in checkout — including Shop Pay Installments, PayPal Wallet, and some local payment methods such as iDEAL and Sofort. If your store relies on any of these, test them separately using a real transaction with an immediate refund.

Process a small real order using your live payment provider, then immediately cancel and refund it. Be aware that some payment provider fees and credit card third-party transaction fees may not be returned to you even after issuing a refund. Check your payment provider's terms before using this method. This validates the entire flow but may incur processor fees. Use this method only if you need to confirm your actual provider configuration works end-to-end.

Now that your payment gateway is configured for testing, walk through the customer purchase experience.

Add a product to your cart by visiting your online store's homepage, selecting a product, and clicking Add to cart > Checkout.

Fill in customer information, shipping address, and select a shipping method. If you've set up taxes, verify the correct tax amount displays. Choose your test payment method and complete the order.

Check your email for the order confirmation. Review the Orders page in your Shopify admin to confirm the order appears correctly.

If you run a retail location or plan to use Shopify POS, process at least one in-person test transaction.

Before testing POS, activate cash payments and cash tracking. Go to Settings > Payments in your Shopify admin and ensure cash is enabled under Manual payment methods.

In the Shopify POS app, start a new cash tracking session by tapping ≡ > Settings > Cash tracking > Start session.

Add a product to the cart in Shopify POS, tap Checkout > Cash, select a cash amount, and complete the transaction. Optionally, add a test customer to the order and send a receipt via email or print.

Add an order note like "Test transaction" to keep records clear, then tap Done.

You can't process credit card transactions using a Shopify POS card reader when Shopify Payments is in test mode. Use cash payments for POS testing, or deactivate test mode if you need to validate card reader functionality with a real transaction.

Review your checkout configuration to ensure all fields and options match your business requirements.

Go to Settings > Checkout and confirm:

Place another test order and verify these settings behave as expected during checkout.

Each test order triggers automated emails. Review the templates your customers will receive.

Go to Settings > Notifications to see the full list of customer, staff, and fulfillment emails. Click any notification to preview and customize its template.

Check your inbox for the order confirmation, shipping confirmation, and any other emails sent during your test orders. Verify branding, tone, and accuracy.

If you've installed apps for upsells, reviews, subscriptions, shipping automation, or other functions, validate each one works correctly.

Place test orders that trigger each app's functionality:

Monitor your app dashboards and check whether data syncs correctly between Shopify and third-party tools like email marketing platforms, inventory systems, or accounting software.

Confirm tax calculations match your requirements by placing test orders with different shipping addresses (in-state, out-of-state, international if applicable).

Go to Settings > Taxes to review your tax setup. If you've configured manual rates, location-based rules, or use Shopify's automatic tax calculations, verify the amounts at checkout.

For shipping, place test orders to each zone you've configured. Go to Settings > Shipping and delivery to review your rates and zones.

Check that calculated rates (if using carrier-calculated shipping) display correctly and that flat rates or free shipping thresholds apply as expected.

If you're using Shopify Collective as a supplier or retailer, you need to test the end-to-end flow with a connected store.

Decide how to connect: invite a store you already know, use another Shopify store you own, or create a new trial store specifically for testing.

Both stores must meet Shopify Collective requirements. If you're the supplier, invite a retailer and ensure they install the Shopify Collective app. If you're the retailer, invite a supplier and ensure they install the sales channel.

After setting up a price list and importing products, place a test order with a real transaction using Shopify Payments to validate the order flow between stores.

A new trial store cannot be used to test Shopify Collective — both stores must have an active paid Shopify plan and Shopify Payments fully set up to meet eligibility requirements. If you don't have a second qualifying store, contact Shopify Support for guidance before investing time in the setup.

If you plan to have team members manage your store, add at least one staff account and test permission levels.

Go to Settings > Users and permissions and click Add staff. Assign specific permissions to restrict access to sensitive areas like payments or reports.

Log in as the staff user to confirm they can access only the sections you've granted.

Once all tests pass:

Note that only test orders placed through the Bogus Gateway or Shopify Payments test mode can be deleted. Orders placed through a third-party gateway in test mode are not classified as test orders by Shopify and cannot be deleted — they can only be archived.

Then go to Online Store > Preferences and disable password protection to make your store publicly accessible.

Most first-time merchants worry about getting too many orders before they're ready — but experienced Shopify sellers will tell you the real challenge is usually the opposite. If you want to control your rollout while still gathering real feedback, set your inventory levels to a small number (say, 10–20 units) and enable a back-in-stock notification flow. This gives you a natural cap on orders, a list of genuinely interested buyers for when you reopen, and honest signal about whether real customers — not just friends — will put money down. Friends will almost always say your product is great. Strangers spending their own money will tell you the truth.
