How to Switch Between Stores in Shopify

If you manage multiple Shopify stores or organizations with the same email address, switching between them shouldn't slow you down. Shopify's store switcher lets you navigate between stores directly from your admin without logging out and back in. This guide walks you through how to use the store switcher on desktop and mobile, how to troubleshoot common issues, and when you might need alternative solutions for managing multiple brands.

What Is the Shopify Store Switcher

The store switcher is a feature in the top bar of your Shopify admin that displays all stores and organizations associated with your email address. It shows your most recently accessed stores first for quick switching, and includes a searchable list if you manage a large number of stores.

The store switcher only displays active stores. Frozen, paused, or closed stores won't appear in the list until you re-activate them. If you have access to the Developer Dashboard or Partner dashboard through your organization, these also appear in the store switcher alongside your stores.

Requirements for Using the Store Switcher

To see all your stores in one switcher, each store must use the same email address for your account. The store switcher uses your email to identify which stores you have access to.

If a store is missing from your list, check that your account in that store uses the same email as your other stores. You can't combine stores with different email addresses into one switcher view.

How to Switch Between Stores on Desktop

Switching stores from your desktop admin takes three clicks.

Steps:

Log in to the Shopify admin of one of your stores.
Click the name of your store in the top bar.

Select one of your recent stores from the list that appears.

If the store you're looking for isn't in the quick-access list, click View all to open a searchable list of all your stores without leaving the page. Use the search field to find a store by name, then select it.

The switch happens instantly. You don't need to log out or re-authenticate.

How to Switch Between Stores on Mobile

The Shopify app requires you to add stores to your list before you can switch between them.

Add Stores to Your List

Steps:

From the Shopify app, tap your store name.
Tap Add store or Edit stores.

Select which stores you want to add by tapping the toggle button.

Switch Between Stores

Once you've added stores to your list, you can switch between them anytime.

Steps:

From the Shopify app, tap your store name.
Select a different store to view.

The app loads the selected store's admin immediately.

Accessing Dashboards from the Store Switcher

If you're part of an organization with additional permissions, you might see dashboard links in your store switcher alongside your store list.

Developer Dashboard displays if you have app development permissions in your organization. Use it to manage and test your apps.

Partner dashboard displays if your organization has a linked Shopify Partner account. Use it to manage your partner business.

If dashboard links aren't visible but you believe you should have access, confirm your permissions with your organization admin.

How to Switch Stores in the Shopify Help Center

When you need to contact Shopify Support using the Chat with us button in the Help Center, you must be logged in to the correct store first.

Steps:

Confirm that you're logged in to the Shopify admin of one of your stores.
Click the name of your store in the top bar.
Click Switch store.
Select the store you need support for.

Once you've switched to the correct store, return to the Help Center and click Chat with us. Support will now have the correct store context for your conversation.

Why Is One of My Stores Missing?

If your store switcher list is missing a store, check that your account in that store uses the same email address as your other stores. The store switcher uses your email address to identify stores where you have accounts.

The switcher also doesn't include frozen, paused, or closed stores. If you re-activate one of these stores, it will be re-added to your available stores list automatically.

I Can't Find a Store in the Store Switcher

If you have a large number of stores, use the search field in the full store list to find a specific store. Click your store name in the top bar, then click View all to open a searchable list. Enter the store name in the search field to locate it quickly.

I Manage Stores with Different Email Addresses

The store switcher only works for stores that share the same email address. If you manage stores with different emails, you'll need to log out and log back in with the appropriate credentials for each store.

Alternatively, consider updating your user accounts to use the same email where possible, or use different browser profiles to stay logged in to multiple accounts simultaneously.

Managing Multiple Stores vs. Expansion Stores

If you're on Shopify Plus and manage multiple brands under one organization, you might be eligible for expansion stores instead of separate independent stores.

Shopify Plus organizations can have a maximum of 10 stores under one contract at no additional platform cost: one primary store and up to nine expansion stores. Development and staging stores do not count toward this limit. If you need more than 10 stores, contact Shopify Plus Support to discuss your options.

Expansion stores are additional storefronts within your organization that share some administrative features and billing. You can create expansion stores from Settings > Organization > Create store in your Shopify admin.

If your stores don't qualify as expansion stores, you might be eligible for a multi-brand agreement, which allows multiple brands under one organization but requires each brand to have its own separate Shopify Plus plan subscription. Contact Shopify Support to discuss multi-brand options.

What Settings Are Connected to Your Shopify Account

When you switch between stores, certain settings pages remain connected to your Shopify account across all stores:
