1. Rewrite the opening to answer the question, not introduce the category
Compare these two openings for a "linen shirts" category page:
- "Welcome to our linen collection, crafted for comfort and style." Tells an AI system nothing.
- "Our linen shirts are breathable, wrinkle-resistant after light care, and available in relaxed and tailored fits from size S to XXL." Gives an AI system entities and use cases to match against a shopper's query.
The first 200 words of the page need to directly and completely answer the primary question the page targets. Everything else, brand story, seasonal messaging, can come after.
2. Add a comparison or "best for" structure inside the category page
If your category page is just a product grid, it has nothing for an AI system to extract. Add a short "best for" breakdown above the grid: best for daily office wear, best for summer heat, best for travel. Comparison and best-of content accounts for the largest single share of AI citations across generative engines, more than any other content type tracked. A category page that does some of this comparing work itself gets cited more often than one that doesn't.
3. Add an FAQ section built from real purchase-intent questions
Pull the questions shoppers actually ask before buying in this category, from your own customer support tickets, Reddit threads, or Google's "People also ask." Answer each in 2 to 3 direct sentences, then mark it up with FAQ schema. This is the single easiest structural fix with outsized impact on AI citation, and most Shopify category pages skip it entirely.
4. Implement Product and FAQ schema at the category level
Basic schema gets you a rich snippet on Google. For AI systems, go deeper: mark up aggregate rating, review count, price range, and availability at the category level, not just on individual product pages. If you're comparing schema options,

5. Link internally to your best comparison and buying-guide content
If you have a "best linen shirts for summer" guide elsewhere on the site, link to it from the category page, and vice versa. AI systems that crawl one of these pages benefit from clear signals that the other exists and covers the same entity in more depth.
6. Add a visible last-updated date and refresh the content on a real cadence
A category page written in 2024 with no updates loses ground every month to a competitor's 2026 version. Add a visible "last updated" date, and actually update it: refresh pricing ranges, seasonal language, and any outdated product mentions at least quarterly.
